Reuven mentions the idea of Zionism as a talking point at dinner with the Saunders. Reb gets extremely upset and tells reuven to leave. He also tells his son never to speak to Reuven again because of his fathers Zionist beliefs.
After two years of non-communication between the boys. The israeli state is established. Reb Saunders realizes that there is no use in keeping the boys apart so he permits them to speak again. He speaks to Danny through Reuven and explains himself and why he has been silent all these years.
Danny accepts that being raised in silence was a good method for giving him a "soul," and says to Reuven's father that he will one day raise his own son in silence.
