  • In the north they had a lot of mining, cutting trees for lumber, and textiles.
  • The majority of people in the north lived in farms. But some lived in cities.
  • Cities were often crowded and dirty. Not until the after the 1830's were harbors and streets were improved.In about the 1800's about 5 percent of the population lived in cities, but by 1850 nearly 15 percent did.
  • The south had slaves did a lot of labor work like growing crops including rice, cotton, and corn. That Alabama and Mississippi had.
  • The owners of the large plantations were incredibly wealthy and lived in luxury. Their Kids usually attended one of the best schools.
  • The north and the south fought in 1861. The north had approximately 2 million soldiers and the south had only 800 thousand soldiers, which the north won.
