Storyboard Text

  • The rescue team brought in a number of cats and dogs to the veterinarian in a month, and each required a number of injections to be vaccinated...
  • Dr. Pierce, I'm the corporate lawyer, and I need the number of both cats and dogs that have been brought here by the rescue team to be vaccinated this month. The financial aid worker is pressuring me to file and report it right away.
  • A total of 35 dogs and cats were brought in this month, and we have given a total of 195 vaccination. However, I’m not sure how many of each were brought specifically.

  • But we need to know how many of each so we can file it accurately! How many injections did each animal get?
  • The cats got 5 injections, for the core potential diseases, which are rabies, herpes, calici, panleukopenia, and feline leukemia. Meanwhile, each dog required 6 shots to prevent getting core diseases, which are distemper, rabies, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, and parainfluenza.
  • So that means each cat got 5 shots, and each dog got 6. And the total of cats and dogs is 35, and the total of 195 injections.
  • Yeah, but how does that help us find the number of each creature?
  • It allows us to form a system of equations. Mathematical speaking, if the cats are represented by c, and dogs are represented by d, c+d=35, and 5c+6d=195.
  • That's right! And we can use inverse of matrices to find out each of c and d.
  • After using inverse of matrices to solve the system of equations, the corporate lawyer and Dr. Pierce found out that 15 cats and 20 dogs have been vaccinated. And the corporate lawyer was finally able to file her findings.
  • 15 cats and 20 dogs brought in by the rescue team in a month were vaccinated.......
