Storyboard Text

  • Besides the Clutter family and the detective Alvin Dewey, the main characters of "In Cold Blood", are the murderers Perry Smith and Richard "Dick" Hickock. Both men developed serious personality issues throughout the book; they felt they had been dealt the short length of the stick in life.
  • The setting of "In Cold Blood" mainly takes place in the rural parts of Kansas and nearby states. The murder happened in Holcombe, Kansas and the trial for the murders happened in Garden City.
  • I'm glad I have such a happy family!
  • The main conflict of the story is between the two main characters, Perry and Dick, and the pursuit of the criminals. The two main characters have personality conflicts and the story shows how they cope with being wanted, and their want to lead their dream life despite having commited a heinous act.
  • Stop talking about the DAMN family, Perry.
  • The climax of "In Cold Blood" happens when the criminals are caught, and are pressured into confessing and turning each other in. When they get the confessions, the fake relationship that Perry and Dick had crumbled. They became alone in facing the judicial system, and had lost hope for the lives they wanted to lead.
  • We have a witness.
  • In my opinion, the theme of the book is the emerging prevalence of violence in society during the 1960's.
  • The author presents the importance of violence in between bursts of humanity that readers can relate to through his message that violence happens through pre-meditated decisions and lack of societal support for people with unstable mentalities. The end of the book accentuates this in the hanging scene, showing that people forging on the wrong path, are dealt with through death so that people in society can ignore those too complex to conform.
