Dred Scott was born a slave and was sold to an army surgeon Dr. John Emerson after his owner Peter Blow passed away. Emerson took Dred Scott with him because he was assigned to duty in Illinois.
In 1818, Illinois passed a Union which allowed residents who owned slaves to retain them as property for the punishment of their crimes.
In 1836 Dred Scott then married a slave named Harriet Robinson in a fort in Wisconsin Territory which caused her ownership to be transferred to Emerson. Later in their lives they decided on having 2 children.
In the same year, Emerson left off and when to engage a woman named Eliza Irene Sandford then sent out to find his slaves again. During the year 1843 Emerson suddenly died which meant that the couple went to Mrs.Emerson.
Dred Scott offered $300 to Mrs. Emerson in order to win his and his family's freedom. When she declined he decided to take the matters in court in order to win his freedom. The trial was then tossed out because Scott could prove that we and his family was owned by Mrs. Emerson. In the 1850 retrial they won the case and got about 2 years of freedom until it was taken away my the Missouri Supreme Court
