  • AGE OF METTERNICH Congress of Vienna 1815
  • Klemens Von Metternich Austrian Foreign Minister
  • We must preserve CONSERVATISM! We shall suppress liberalism and nationalism!
  • For the sake of our multi-ethnic Austrian Empire...
  • Must weaken France! Then we shall restore the Bourbon rulers (principle of legitimacy) in order to preserve Balance of Power. 
  • Austrian foreign minister, Klemens von Metternich, hosted the Congress of Vienna, starting the Age of Metternich from 1815-1848. 
  •  Metternich sought to preserve conservatism because he viewed liberalism and nationalism as a threat to the stability of multi-ethnic Austrian Empire. 
  • France in 1830 
  • The leaders at Congress of Vienna wanted to weaken France in order to preserve the balance of power. They did this by returning to the 1790s borders. Also the 39 German states were now the German Confederation, dominated by Austria. 
  • We want change! We don't want crop failures, rising prices of food, and unemployment!!
  • 1848 
  • Liberals and nationalists across Europe were disappointed by the conservative order by Metternich and the Congress of Vienna. Discontentment led to revolts in France, Italy, Austria, and other countries in Europe. 
  • Discontent with Charles X in France ignited 3 days of rioting in July of 1830. THis united the workers and bourgeoisie who were both dedicated to overthrowing the tyranny. At the end, the bourgeoisie prevailed with the rise of Louis Philippe.

  • Working class radicals and middle class liberals demanded change  in response to social tensions and problems created by industrialization and urbanization.
