I am not going to "pick up a crown from the gutter"!
We must act just like the French! Reforms!!
"Young Italy" led by Mazzini sought to establish a liberal republic. However, the Austrian forces were too strong to defeat.
YAY! Metternich gone!
German nationalists wanted a more liberal German state. The Frankfurt Assembly was held in hopes of drafting a constitution for all of Germany. However, Frederick William supported by the army, quickly dissolved the assembly.
Austria, a multi-ethnic country, was ruled by many different nationalities. Revolution quickly spread from Paris to Vienna, influenced by France's success in revolution. This weakened the central authority of Metternich as different nationalities broke unity.
23 YEARS LATER- 1871
UNIFICATION OF GERMANY! BLOOD AND IRON!
As revolutionary fervor spread and tensions mounted, Metternich resigned and fled to England.
Basic liberal principles of government consent continued to grow as middle class increased in size, wealth, and influence. Nationalism also continued to grow as well.
By 1871, nationalist aspirations led to the unification of Italy and Germany, thus ending the Concert of Europe created by Congress of Vienna.
