Devarim heavily ruminates on the topic of idolatry, especially on the story of the golden calf. However, why would an all-powerful G-d even care? Let's take a closer look at the situation.
Moshe, I am very angry. Bnei Yisrael are worshipping a golden calf! I want to destroy them.
Moshe broke the tablets and prayed for G-d to not destroy anyone. When he went down the mountain he crushed the golden calf and convinced G-d to not destroy anyone. G-d made a new version of the tablets which Moshe went back up to the mountain to get and then placed them in an ark when he got back down. But we still have the question of why G-d cares about idolatry in the first place.
