  • with packet switching the message is broken down into smaller parts(data packets)and these are sent individually through the network 
  • Each packet has header which contain 3 pieces of important information: A source or return address to say where the packet originated from A destination address tell the packet where it has to go A sequence number so that the individual data packets can be resembled in the correct order once they have safely arrived at their destination. 
  • layers: Rules organised into an order in which they need to be applied   Positives:  Reduces complexity   Problems can be broken down into smaller more manageable parts   Different developers can work on different parts to modify a system using layers  It is important that layers are interoperable(they can work/communicate together)

  • which protocol will be used? FTP? Imap? pop? SMTP?HTTP? Https? Path is divided into packet's numbered. Routers operate here. Destination address are set. How will hardware connect between computers?:Ethernet/NIC/MAC addresses
