Dred Scott was born a slave and was owned by a man known as Dr. John Emerson.
During the early 1800's, Dred Scott married a woman named Harriet Robinson in a free state.
Even though Dred Scott was a slave, he was allowed the right to get married. Once his owner, Emerson, had died Scott filed a lawsuit for his family's freedom.
Even after his owner passed, Dred Scott (and now his wife) are still slaves. However, Dr. Emerson's wife is now their master.
After nearly a decade of fighting for his and his wife's freedom, Scott was still not rewarded with being a free couple.
Unfortunately, Dred Scott passed away on September 17, 1858 from tuberculosis around the age of 59.
