  • Riding The Rails During The Great Depression
  • People during the Great Depression were forced to leave their families behind. Men went from city to city looking for jobs or begging. These men were "riding the rails".
  • These are some terrible times. How can i support my family when i can not even feed myself?
  • Riding the rails is very dangerous. Thousands of people have lost their lives due to the fast moving trains and the guards at the railway stations. The station guards were known as bulls.
  • I hope that the next town has jobs available. If not, ill just have to beg.
  • Signs were used by the rail riders at the time. The one that is shown on the garage means that the visitor can have a sit down meal. These signs were used to help other hobos during the depression.
  • Thank you so much.
  • Oh, please come in and eat. I can not stand see anyone suffer in a time like this.
  • Signs left by other people were very important. They acted as warnings or as blessings to the incoming people. The sign left on the sidewalk was warning him of a dog.
  • Finding a job in this time was nearly impossible. People were not able to pay for other workers and nobody had enough money to buy what they were producing.
  • Hello. Any luck with finding work.
  • Yes actually. I could help you but, the pay is terrible and the boss is very strict
