"There seems to be no space for me at central high. I don't want integration to be like the merry-go-ground, God, make space for me" (page 86)
“I couldn’t stop wondering why Mama, Grandma, and Daddy couldn’t talk back to that white man.” (Page 10)
“But when I waved goodbye to him, I knew I would never, ever see him again, although I would remember him forever.” (Page 217)
She prayed for the white people that had risked their lives for her, for her family and the other 9, and the other white people who were angry. I love how Melba prays for everybody, no matter what color and no matter if they are her enemy or not.
The black people were really afraid of the whites at times and didn’t know what to expect from them. These two quotes show how Melba’s family was always cautious when they were around the white people.
Link was such a good friend to Melba, and I seriously want to know how it will turn out for Melba with him not being at school to protect her. Now i think she might not have a good school year.
