  • In the beginning the tone was light, fun, and peaceful. The first line was, “The morning of June 27th, was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day.” This gives off a peaceful mood and shows the tone is peaceful in the beginning.
  • But then the tone gets bolder and darker as people start to question the lottery.
  • In “The Lottery” Shirley Jackson uses words such as Profusely, Perfunctory, Petulantly and Defiantly. Profusely means to be in a freely available way, Perfunctory means to be done mechanically without enthusiasm. This words aren’t to exciting or brightening telling us that the story may be harsh and dark.

  • In “The Lottery” Shirley Jackson uses imagery throughout the story by foreshadowing things such as the description of the black box and the killing of the lottery's winner.
  • Shirley Jackson wrote in two styles. She wrote in a clam way talking about a domestic life, peacefully and chilled. Then about halfway through she changed her style and wrote a terrible horror story, gothic like.
  • In The Lottery they live in a town that is governed by a crazy man.The main theme deals with the dangers of blindly accepting actions as just custom or tradition.
