  • Whiskey Rebellion 
  • Federal Judiciary Act of 1789
  • Marbury V. Madison
  • First opportunity to establish federal authority by military within state boundaries.  Protest of a whiskey tax enacted by the federal government. The rebellion itself built support for the Republicans, which overtook Washington's Federalist Party for power in 1802.
  • Alien Act 
  • The Judiciary Act of 1789 was to establish a federal court system. The Constitution provided that the judicial branch should be composed of one Supreme Court and such inferior courts as Congress from time to time established. 
  • Sedition Act
  • Supreme Court established the principle of judicial review. Courts  declare legislative and executive acts unconstitutional.
  • Louisiana Purchase
  • Federalist signed into a law by president Adams, know as the Alien Act and Sedition Act. These laws made it easier to deport foreigners, and made it harder for the immigrants to vote. 
  • the sedition act affected freedom of speech. Just as this law passed it restricted freedom of speech. This act was set to expire on March 3, 1801, the last day of his term in office.
  • A land deal between France and the United States. The U.S. gathered 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River for $15 million.
