  • By the mid-1770s new Enlightenment ideas had spread as far as North America. These ideas inspire Great Britain's colonists to seek independence and make a new nation based on the ideals of the Enlightenment.
  • Trouble erupted when Britain began to assert its right to impose laws on the colonies.
  • These new laws are ridiculous!!!
  • We should be independence!!!
  • They are not fair!!!
  • The French and Indian war was extremely expensive for Britain. Britain decided to make the colonies pay part of the cost in the form of new taxes. In 1765 Parliament passed The Stamp Act, which required colonies to pay a tax for an official stamp on all newspapers, legal documents, and other public papers.

  • So do we all agree to not buy any English goods?
  • In 1776, Parliament repealed the Stamp Act because colonial leaders called for a boycott on English goods.

  • Dad, can we get some tea?
  • The British, in 1767, imposed a new series of taxes on glass, paper, paints and tea. Furious merchants in Boston, Massachusetts called for another boycott of English goods. The British sent in troops to keep order in the city.

  • Bostonians harassed the troops on the street constantly.
