  • "It was nice in the police cell. It was almost a perfect cube, 2 meters long by 2 meters wide by 2 meters high. It contained approximately 8 cubic meters of air. It had a small window with bars and , on th eopposite side, a metal door with a long, thin hatch near the floor for sliding trays of food into the cell and a sliding hatch higher up so that the policemen could look in and check that the prisoners adn't escaped or commited suicide. There was also a padded bench." (14, Haddon)
  • "And she said, 'Don't worry. I'm not going to tell the police and I'm not going to tell your father, because there's nothing wrong with having a chat. Having a chat is just being friendly isn't it?'" (55, Haddon)
  • "And that was when I saw the envelope. It was an envelope adressed to me and it was lying under my book in the  shirt bow with some other envelopes. I picked it up. It had never been opened." (94, Haddon)

  • "Then he got out of the armchair and he walked over to the kitchen door and opened it and there was a big cardboard box on the floor and there was a blanket in it and he bent down and put his hands inside the box and he took a little sandy-colored dog out." (219, Haddon)
