In the story, the narrator tries to fit herself into the American society by dye her hair, change her wearing style and copied their manners. But her grandmother and mom bring to her a "new idea" that she needs to keep the Korean traditions. She feels lost and went back to Korean, tries to find her identity.
I copied their dress, manners, and models, people I emulated.
The narrator's grandmother and mother tried to force her to marry to a good Korean man as the Korean girls. But she refused. She thinks that as an "American", she should have her own freedom to decided her life. And feels confused that why they moved to American if they don't want to be Americans. This is concerning to be the truing point in the story that she tries to find herself.
Find a good man and get marry. Young girl should listen to parents.
The first conflict in the story is about marry. Her grandmother and mother are holding the traditional Korean idea, and the narrator has the American idea as she tries to fits in the American society. She is lose. She is kind doesn't know that what traditions she needs to keep and why she needs to keep them.
I am an immigrant who from China. Because of my parents job, i moved to here. This is a new world for me. I never expect that i will be standing on this land one day. Exciting, but scared takes more part. I have no clue about this country and everything seems new to me.
This is a challenge for me. The cultures and traditions are really different from my homeland and the American. In my country, we are not use to be open and we are really looking at gender role.(Not in my family, but some others) Girls should do this, boys should do those. I don't like to being like that, to stuck in a small box. I want to look the outside world. I'm looking forward my life in America.
When the school stated. I feel stress. My English is trouble and i feel shy to making new friends. I feel like that i have the different skin and i'm worry about being "segregation". But after a while, i feel the friendly and nicely from different people. And i learned that i need to be open, Girls also can be strong, and they can even try the things the boys do.
