  • Since King Oedipus has left, Thebes has experienced a great deal of hardships. Oedipus's two son's disagreed on who would inherit the throne, and after a long battle both sons die, and the throne is left to Creon.
  • Creon reflects on becoming king.
  • Oh, how nice it is to finally be King, I can now assert my power over Thebes!
  • I am "the reservoir of basic instinctual drives."
  • Meanwhile inside of Creon's head: The three aspects of his personality are competing for influence.
  • I am "the center of reason, reality-testing, and commonsense"
  • Id
  • Ego
  • I am a "further differentiation within the ego which represents its “ideal.”"
  • Superego
  • (Lapsley and Stey 1)
  • I "operate in pursuit of pleasure" and one of the greatest pleasures is power. We must assert our power!!
  • (Lapsley and Stey 1)
  • I'm supposed to be a "psychical agency (that) emerges to observe the ego and to measure it by its ideal" But he won't listen!
  • Ok I think that that is in the best interests of Creon, we need power!
  • (Lapsley and Stey 5)
  • Creon speaks before the citizens of Thebes and explains his order.
  • As King, I order that no one bury Polynices, as he was never truly king of Thebes! If anyone disobeys they will be killed.
