On the morning of June 27th it was a clear and sunny day with flowers blossoming and the grass was green. The people of the village gathered because today was the lottery. School recently ended for the summer.
The boys and girls first gathered and the boys collected smooth stones. The girls made jokes. The men came shortly came and surveyed their own children. Shortly the women wearing faded house dresses and sweaters, came shortly after their menfolk. Soon after The postmaster, and Mr.Graves followed carrying a three legged stool. The stool was placed in he center and Mr. Summers placed the black box.
The lottery soon started after everyone gathered. Mr Summer then started to list everyone that had gathered. Then came the Hutchinson's. Mr Summers then called Bill Hutchinson up. Mrs. Hutchinson then says, " Get up there Bill." The Jones is called up by Mr Summers. All citizens take a piece of paper until everyone had a turn. Then suddenly Tessie Hutchinson looks to Mr. Summers and said, " You didn't give him enough time to take any paper he wanted. I saw you It wasn't Fair!"
Mr. Summer then tells everyone to open there papers. Going around family to family. Then the Hutchinson's where next. Then Mr. Summer said, "Tessie." Then there was a pause, and then Mr.Summers looked at Bill unfolded his paper and showed It. The Mr Summer said, " Show us her paper, Bill." Bill went over and it had a black spot on it. The same spot he made the night before.
After Bill Showed this Mr. Summer said, " Let's finish quickly" Although they forgot the original ritual they remembered to use stones. All the children had stones and gave little Davy one. Tessie stood in the center with her hands out.
Then as the villagers moved in she said, "It isn't fair please." A stone hit her on the side of her head. Old men Warner was saying, "Come on Come on, everyone."
