It is the middle of World War I. Two soldiers join the army, one German (Hans Weber) and one Britain (George Taylor). They both come from middle class families that are not poor, but not rich either.
Both get into similar situations where someone dies for them. Both are scarred by the experience, but Hans is turned more timid, while George is made more tough.
They enter into a battle for the second time. They run around the battlefield and get into a position. Many ideas run through their minds about what they might have to do in the battle.
Hans and George see each other on the battlefield. They both take aim at each other intending to shoot. One pulls the trigger and the other cannot bring himself to do it.
The gun which trigger was pulled doesn't shoot. Both panic after not shooting and quickly take cover. They both quickly retreat and think about what had just happened.
As soon as the battle ends George begins to ready himself for the next one where he is ready with a new gun. Hans has started to plan on how to withdraw from the front line and try to get a non combat job.
