Storyboard Text

  • The Merchant of Venice
  • Everyone knows you just want to kill Antonio.
  • Act IV Scene I
  • by Zac Johnston
  • I have a message for you
  • Shylock is at the court in Venice for Antonio's trial. He tells the Duke of Venice and everyone in the court room that Antonio hasn't paid him back the 3,000 decuts that he borrowed from him to help his friend Bassanio.
  • The law allows you to take a pound of flesh but not a single drop of blood.
  • Oh bother!
  • Shortly afterwards, Antonio arrives at the court. Shylock has already told him that if he can't repay his debt within 3 months then he will have to give up a pound of his flesh. Antonio is prepared to die.
  • Nerissa enters the courtroom. She is dressed as a court clerk and she tells the Duke of Venice that the doctor of laws can't make it but he is sending a young doctor in his place.
  • END OF ACT IV SCENE I
  • Portia, Bellario's wife, then enters dressed as the young doctor. She tricks Shylock by telling him that he can have his pound of flesh as long as no blood is drawn from Antonio. Shylock knows that means he can't kill Antonio.
  • The Duke then orders that Shylock must give up half of his goods to Antonio. Antonio shows mercy and kindness though by saying he will only take half of those goods. Shylock agrees to this.
