Storyboard Text

  • Mariam's guardian is found dead
  • "The rope dropping from a high branch. Nana dangling at the end of it." (36)
  • Jalil makes Mariam sleep outside and pretends he isn't home
  • "He let her sleep on the street. On the street." (35)
  • Jalil tells Mariam she is going to be sent away to get married
  • "I don't want to" Mariam said. She looked at Jalil. "I don't want this. Don't make me" (47)
  • This connects to the theme "enduring the unendurable" because Mariam loses the person she was closest to in life and blames herself for her loss, and has no other family to run to.
  • This connects to the theme because Mariam's father neglects her, and even though her mother tried to warn her of how evil he is she still saw the best of him, until he refused to let her inside.
  • This connects to the theme because Mariam is only a 15 year old girl, and she has no voice on a situation that she not only does not want, but will also heavily impact her life.
