  • Will we have a tax on imports or exports?
  • Let's compromise!
  • Will the slave trade continue?
  • James Madison: Let me trade some of mine for some of yours.
  • George Washington:  look at my slaves
  • George Mason: Something has to be done about this!
  • Northern states wanted taxes on both imports and exports.
  • $$$$$$$
  • $$$$
  • NO MORE TAXES on imports we need money!
  • The Commerce Compromise agreed there would be a tax on imports and exports.  Commerce legislation would have to be passed by 2/3 majority in the Senate.  The North and the South were happy!
