  • Both Arthur Miller and John Proctor were expected to save themselves by betraying their peers when they were wrongfully accused of acting against a dearly held value of their society. Each chose to take their punishment instead.
  • John Proctor was expected to testify against others to avoid prosecution after he was accused of being a witch, but he refused.
  • When accused of communism, Arthur Miller refused to out others as communists to save his career.
