The children get out of school and are collecting stones. At the beginning we don't know why because we haven't read the end. Soon people began to gather and the mood of the area is very dull as they are explaining that people only smiled at jokes , not laughed.
The Narrator gave small descriptions of various characters. Some people described were the "The postmaster Mr.Graves" and "Mr.Summers who was a round-faced jovial man who ran the coal business" .There was also a box with slips of paper in it that a few various villagers were helping Mr.Summers carry.
It wasn't fair!!
Once everybody had a slip of paper... everybody found out that Bill Hutchinson had the paper. Tessie claimed that Mr.Summers didn't give him enough time to chose a paper.
