When the Earth had no rivers, the Jade Dragon was in charge of the clouds and rain, coming and going when she decided.
The Jade Dragon had four children, Black, Long, Pearl, and Yellow. All of them had both good health and good hearts.
One day the Jade Dragon overheard two men talking. "I am glad the rain is gone!" the first said. "Yes the sun is finally shining again," said the second. This filled the Jade Dragon with fury. She was so offended by their remarks, she never made it rain again.
Soon the people began to suffer. "Forgive us!!" they pleaded, but the Jade dragon didn't listen. But it was herd by her children. "Forgive them!" the children pleaded, but their mother made a vow to never let it rain for the people again.
Together, the children decided to sacrifice themselves for the people. They did this without disobeying their mother by turning themselves into the four great rivers.
Broke with grief and sadness, the Jade Dragon fell from the sky and formed the Jade River, in hopes of in a way reuniting with her children. Fruitless Mountain is her broken heart and will remain so until she reunites with at least one of her children.
