Peterson & Peterson- Short-term retention of individual verbal items Aim- To test duration of short-term memory
Procedure- Lab experiment with 24 students who had to recall trigrams (random 3 letters) at different intervals whilst rehearsal is prevented as students also had to count backwards.
Findings- found that short-term memory has a limited duration of 18 seconds. if not rehearsed information is not passed to long-term memory
strengths - it is a controlled standardised experiment so we can check reliability.
another strength is that it gives useful information on how to remember and the effects that help.
Limitation- the experiment is not a realistic task therefore lacks mundane realism
