After Germany's loss of WW2, Germany is divided into four zones belonging to France, the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union. This caused tensions between these countries because the Soviets forced their agenda for Eastern Germany on the other countries using their veto power.
Next after Germany's defeat came the proposal by George Marshall to aid struggling European countries financially, sponsored by the United States. This was named the Marshall's plan, named after George Marshall.

I propose a plan to help out European countries economically!
Soon, Russia and the United states were locked in a nuclear weapon competition. Each country wanted to be ahead of the other and produce the most atomic weapons. This caused much tension between these two countries and the two began to distance themselves from each other politically.
Bill, we've got to up our nuclear game! The Soviets are catching up to us!
Good idea. We have got to keep our technology ahead of their atomic weapons.
