It is January 10,1951.A date that will be remembered as one of the darkest in history.North Korean forces captured Seoul and both UN and U.S top brass where beginning to consider how worthwhile the Korean conflict was. While Macarthur and the majority of the US military command suggested use of atomic or nuclear weapons,Truman believed all was lost.Evacuation commenced on January 10,and U.N forces where compleetely clear of the peninsula on January 17.
The vast peninsula is united under the Communist banner, and becomes the Peoples Republic Of Korea under Kim il Seung's control. The soviets, emboldened, annex Finland and makes it another member of it's web of satileite nations. In America the public are in a state of disaray.Truman already loathed by conservatives for allowing China to fall to the Communists is universally seen as passive, and due to his slashing of the military budget in the middle of wartime, weak.
While the war was a loss for the United States as a whole,is spurned the political careers of dozens of politicians and instigated the growth of parties across the politcal spectrum. The far right was specficially emboldened the Korean fiasco seemingly proving the Communist takeover conspiracies that had spoken of only amongst themselves.Between 1951-1952 John Birch Society membership increased tenfold.
Not only was the American public divided, the politcal class was even more so.The Republicans knew their victory in the 1952 election was a certainity but their nominee was more of a mystery. While a nominee with a military background was less likely due to the war.Taft was too elderly to generate excitement in the voting public.
The Democratic Party however, was in a state of chaos. They couldn't choose Truman as the nominee to the public's intense dislike of him.Adlai Stevenson was seen as too patrician and intellectual.Kauvever too ferently segregationist .No matter the option.it's seemed that their party was doomed,
The United States is in a state of peril.Who will lead it?
