And the Lord spoke to Jonah, "Go to Nineveh, that great city, and speak out against its people are." Jonah refused and turn his back to the Lord, taking a ship from Joppa to go to Spain.
But the Lord sent a strong wind, and the ship and the people were in danger. Jonah was found sound asleep by the captain, and he told him to pray to his God. They all drew lots and said that whoever was picked was the reason why they were all in danger. Not unexpectedly, Jonah's name was drawn.
Jonah told them that he worships the Lord, and how he was running away from Him. The sailors were terrified and asked Jonah what they should do. "Throw me into the sea, and it will calm down at once"
The Lord commanded a big fish to swallow Jonah, and so he was inside the big fish for three whole days. While he was inside, Jonah prayed and prayed to the Lord, telling him how great a God and a saviour He is. The Lord then ordered the big fish to spit him out, and so it did.
Now go to the great city of Ninevah, and proclaim the message I gave to you.
Jonah told them all about the Lord, and the King of Ninevah covered himself with sackcloth, and told his fellow Ninevites to do the same. They all called on to the Lord and gave up their evil doings, making God change his mind about their destruction.
Jonah became angry at the Lord, and he made his own shelter. The Lord gave him a plant that he loved and made a worm eat it. Jonah got angrier and the Lord said if Jonah is so upset about destroying a plant, what’s so bad about God sparing the residents of Nineveh?
