  • Japan is surrendering in World War 2.
  • No! This is terrible!
  • We are hungry
  • I am General MacArthur and I am here to reform Japan on behalf of SCAP.
  • We will rebuild in 3 main different stages.
  • When Emperor Hirohito decided Japan was going to surrender, many people were devastated.
  • I hope I am not considered to have committed a war crime!
  • After WWII, most of Japan’s large cities, industries and transportation were very damaged. This resulted in an extreme food shortage for a couple years.

  • Thanks to the Korean War, our economy will be saved!!
  • General Douglas A. MacArthur played a large part in rebuilding Japan through SCAP. There were three main phases of Japan’s reconstruction: reforms, economy, and a formal peace treaty.
  • I am glad we signed that treaty.
  • Phase 1: War crime trials were held and all former military officers were banned from being allowed to have a political role in Japan.
  • Phase 2: Japan's economy was able to grow thanks to Korea. Japan took supplies and raw materials from Korea and sold them to UN forces who needed it during the Korean War.
  • Phase 3: A formal peace treaty was created and signed in San Francisco.
