He gets his pants caught in the fence at Boo Radley’s house while being nosy. He has to make a tough decision to either own up to what he has done, or save the relationship with his father and go get his pants. This puts him in an adult like situation.
Nathan Radley has cemented the knothole shut and Jem is upset. He realized that everything in life isn’t going to always be a tiptoe through the tulips. He matures into a young adult in this scene when the only joy in his life is stripped away.
Atticus is telling Jem why he went and read to Mrs. Dubose. It was also his consequence for cutting up her camellias. This shows him that he has to own up to his mistakes and that he will have consequences for his actions. He also learned something from Mrs. Dubose through the process.
