  • In 1808, democratic republican James Madison was elected as the president of the United States. He would go on to be the first president to declare war on a foreign country.

  • During this time British sailors would imprison American sailors and force them the serve in the British navy. This was called impressment. It was the main reason James Madison declared war on Britain.

  • After James Madison became aware of the British presence in the Great Lakes, and infuriated with impressment, he decided to declare war on Britain, and start the War of 1812.
