The story begins with a group of elementary school kids planting trees, and their teacher Edgar observing.
Then the story tells about the kids planting the garden out behind the school for educational purposes. But, later the plants get killed off for some unknown reason..
The pattern of deaths continue as the herbs die, the snakes die, the puppy dies. The author also recounts the deaths of parents and grandparents being unusually high.
The story culminates when two of the school children die at a construction site.
The story changes tone as the children question the teacher about death and he has no answers. They ask him to kiss the other teacher. He complies, wanting to show there is meaning in life.
The story closes with the knock at the door, and the gerbil comes into the room showing that the cycle of life continues.
