This memory was similar to the first one he had received, but it was much colder and the snow was thicker than before. He started to move slowly and gradually to the point where he was throw into the air furiously and then he felt it. The feeling of pain flooding his leg. He was started to sob and scream for the excruciating pain to end.
When Jonas woke up from the memory, in the annex room with a face full of tears. He then looked at his unbroken leg, remembering the painful memory. The pain was now gone, but it still ached terribly. Jonas asked for a relief-of-pain, but the Giver answered with a no and looked away.
At the evening meal, Jonas' father asked if he was feeling okay and if he would like some medication, but Jonas wasn't allowed to have any medication related to his training. After evening meal, he headed to his sleeping room early, and could overhear his parents giving Gabriel his evening bath. The realization made him feel so lonely that his household has never felt pain. He eventually drifted off to sleep, dreaming about the painful memory again.
The training continued daily, and it now included pain, but every time the Giver would give a memory of pleasure. Jonas had just received a memory of hunger and had asked why does he have to hold the many memories and the Giver said it gave then wisdom when the Committee of Elders called upon him. They continued on discussing about how they together could change things and how the memories helped him make the correct discussions.
At the evening meal, they discussed about a birth of twins next month and which one be selected for release. Since, Gabriel still having a bit of trouble sleeping at night, Jonas volunteered to watch him.
Gabriel slept undisturbed for the earliest part of the night, but during the middle hours of the night, Gabriel began to whimper. Jonas softly patted his back to lull him back to sleep. Jonas in that exact moment remembered about a memory in of a boat sailing on a lake, but the memory was slipping out of his grasp and becoming dimmer and dimmer. He quickly removed his hand. Again later on, Gabriel started to whimper and Jonas gave him the rest of the memory and decided not to tell the Giver.
