- Son of Dougles Hull and Sarah Hayes Hine
- Born in Oshkosh Wisconsin September 26th, 1874
- Growing up, Hine worked many odd jobs to support his family. He worked long hours with little pay. He worked closely with child laborers. After experiencing what they go through first hand, he was inspired to change their lives
- While attending University of Chicago, he was hired as a geography teacher and learned how to use a camera
- He married Sarah Ann Ritch in 1904 after meeting her in college
- He taught his students the importance of pictures, how he believes they help others understand different cultures, send powerful messages, and address major problems
- Hine traveled the world with his students, taking pictures of over worked children in bad working conditions.
- His photos and reports changed public opinion and inspired congress to enact national child labor legislation- which made working conditions safer
