- The Ngai Tai tribe lived under forest cover of the waitakere and controlled land as far north as kaipara
- The dominant power on the tamaki isthmus was wai ohua a feration of the tribes formed under hua i kaiuraki and linked to the te arawa tribe Nga oho

- Between 1740 adn 1750 Ngati wha tua o kaipara moved south invading the isthmus and killing kiwi tamaki chief of Wai o Hua then secured dominance by marrying with Nga oho Wai o hua descendants

- From the 1600 to 1750 the tamaki tribes terraced the volcanic cones, building pa. Across the isthmus they developed 2000 hectares of kumara gardens.
- IN 1750 the population numbered tens of thousands. It was the pre-European New Zealand's most wealthy and populous area.
- In 1821 wanting revenge on the Tamaki tribes they launched an attack killing hundreds and enslaving hundreds more.
