- Yes! I am a settlement house worker! I help run houses for immigrants who are new to the country. If you would like, I could provide you with a place to stay. In the meanwhile, you can work in a factory down the road.
- “Hello, I just arrived to America from Ireland. I have no money, no job, and no place to stay. Can you please help me out?
- (The immigrant worked in the factory, but she was taken advantage of by her boss because she was not fluent in English, and she could not risk losing her only source of income.)

- I am Upton Sinclair, and I sought to expose the corruption that is deeply rooted in the corporations of America. I investigated and exposed the terrible conditions at the meatpacking plant in my book, ‘The Jungle.’ My work influenced Congress to pass the Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act.
- I hate those muckrakers. They’re always writing about our businesses and sharing all our secrets. It’s going to destroy any booming businesses and the economy.
- We are the union workers of America, and we demand more pay for our hours. If we don’t get this, we want shorter workdays. We will go on strike for however long until our conditions are met!
- Ok, we will do this for you all, but that means that you must work for however long you come in, and you must follow all our rules...no exceptions!
- (People were locked in their workplaces. Although they succeeded by achieving shorter working hours, their bosses locked them into the factories and had unsafe working conditions. This was a prime reason the Triangle shirtwaist factory fire occurred.)
- This fire is horrible!
- Mom! I now don't have to work because they changed the age requirement! Thanks to the efforts of the unions, the child labor laws allow me to learn instead.
- Although this is good, how am I going to make ends meet without the income of my son? We won't be able to afford anything!
