After arriving at Montag's home, Mildred abandons Montag and Beatty forces Montag to burn down his own house and places him under arrest. Montag is further provoked by the criticism of Beatty, invoking him to burn Montag with the flamethrower as well. Also threatened by the attacking Mechanical Hound, Montag decimates it too.
Escaping the scene, Montag runs down the empty boulevard mindlessly to avoid the police and beetle. Here, he stops at the gas station to clean up. Along the way, Montag drops his books and stumbles, but this ironic series of events help him avoid being captured by the beetle.
Montag decides to stop at Faber's house, where Faber and his wife reside. Though he can not stay long, Faber pours both of them a drink and admits that he finally feels like he is fulfilling his life goals. On the TV broadcast of the police hunt, they learn of a new hound on the search. Before leaving, Faber provides Montag with some of his old dirty clothes and money.
