Storyboard Text

  • While chatting with her mentor, Peg, about her daughter's wild life, "Her daughter felt like a stranger, and maybe, if she was still in Mallard, she would be amused by all the ways that they were different. By all the ways her daughter reminded her of Desiree, even- she might laugh with her sister about it. Are you sure she's not yours?" (Bennett 232). Though maybe not as often or as passionately, Stella still thinks of Desiree, ad even sees her sister in  her own daughter.
  • While in high school, Stella questioned Kennedy's reckless choices and lack of consistency, "'Why can't you just be yourself?' Stella asked once. 'Maybe I don't know who that is,' her daughter shot back. And Stella understood, she did" (Bennett 227). This quote is incredibly ironic because Stella scolds her daughter for lack of self awareness, while at the same time not being true to her own.
  • Near the beginning of the book, the author presents a hypothetical, "And yet, if Alphose Decuir could have strolled through the town he'd once imagined, he would have been thrilled by the sight of his great-great-granddaughters. Twin girls, creamy skin, hazel eyes, wavy hair" (Bennett 6). Though children, Stella and Desiree were still perfect images of the Mallard values.
  • What does the character think about?
  • Stella's daughter Kennedy is often woken up out of her sleep because of nightmares, "In the middle of the night, her daughter woke up screaming, and Stella stumbled into the girl's room to find her in the throe of another nightmare. She crawled into the tiny bed, gently shaking her awake. 'I know, I know,' she said, dabbing at her tears" (Bennett 150). Stella's love for Kennedy is expressed here, though later in the book, Kennedy will come to question it.
  • What are some key things they say?
  • After a few years following their father's death, the twins began building their own separate person, "Soon it became laughable that there had ever been a time when no one could tell the twins apart... Stella, so calm that even Sal Delafosse ornery horse never bucked around her... Stella, whip smart, who would go to college if her mother could afford it" (Bennett 36).  Stella, even as a child, has always been described as calm and quiet.
  • How does the character look?
  • Stella returns to school to earn her GED, "SO she'd told Blake that she wanted to take a GED class. 'I think that's great, Stel,' he said. He was pacifying her, of course, but she signed up for the classes anyway. Two nights in a row, she sat i the parking lot outside of the public library, afraid to venture inside. She would feel stupid, staring blankly at the chalkboard" (Bennett 224). Stella takes up classes at Santa Monica College because she felt bored and uneducated. This plays into her character because she always wanted to go to college and become a teacher.
