- The Holocaust was the persecution and systematic murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.
- The Germans targeted non-Jewish Polish intellectuals to kill them.
- They deported millions of Poles and Soviet civilians to do forced labor in Germany or occupied Poland, where these people worked and often died under deplorable conditions.
- The German authorities persecuted other groups for political, ideological and behavioral reasons. Among them were communists, socialists, Jehovah's Witnesses and homosexuals.
