Storyboard Text

  • And trouble deaf Heaven with my bootless cries
  • This line truly displays how unsatisfied he is with his life. He is crying and pleading with god to make things less miserable. However he claims that heaven is not answering his calls. We know this because the author described his pleas as bootless which is another word for useless.
  • This line is important because it helps set the tone for the beginning of the poem. It also helps the reader understand the man's feelings with hopelessness and frustration.
  • Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope,
  • There are three main themes portrayed in this poem. They are hopelessness, jealously, and love. In this quote, he is feeling envious of the people around him. In his eyes they are successful and talented yet he is the opposite.
  • This line contributes to the poem because it further shows how miserable this man is. He is completely unhappy with the state of his life.
  • Imagery is used throughout this poem. One example is when Shakespeare wrote, "I all alone beweep my outcast state." In this quote the reader can create a mental image to imagine how hopeless and deserted the man feels. Another example is the line, "That then I scorn to change my state with kings'." By ending the poem with imagery, the audience can picture how at peace the man is and how he came to the conclusion that love is the only thing that matters.
  • The turn in line 12 changes the atmosphere and mood of the poem. For instance he states "From sullen earth) sings hymns at heaven's gate." This line describes how his love for this person is suddenly changing his outlook and self image. Before the turn, the man struggles with feelings of hopelessness, jealously, and isolation. The overall mood is very gloomy. However after line 12 we begin to see his thoughts and attitude change. The turn transforms the sonnet from a poem of misery into a poem of love.
  • For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings
  • Towards the end of the poem the man starts to think of a special person. In this line he is saying that thinking of this person makes him happy. This is a drastic change in his attitude. To be specific he spent the majority of the poem talking about his failures
  • and shortcomings. Now his mindset has changed. Now he recognizes that nothing really matters. Only love truly can satisfy him.
  • That then I scorn to change my state with kings'
  • This line is very important. It brings the poem to a beautiful finish. Basically, he is saying that this love is so powerful that he wouldn't even want to exchange places with a king. In other words the love of this person brings him peace of mind.
  • Unlike before, he is now content with the way things are. This makes the poem more optimistic instead of dark and gloomy.
