Storyboard Text

  • Why were earlier settlers so focused on tobacco cultivation?
  • Ummm..boss? The fruit has gone bad again....
  • i TOLD YOU WE SHOULD HAVE BROUGHT MORE TOBACCO!
  • WHAT? DARN IT!
  • What factors led to the changeover from tobacco to sugar?
  • I want to make tea but there's nothing to sweeten my tea with.....
  • What was the role played by the Dutch in the changeover?
  • WE NEED SOMETHING OTHER THAN HONEY TO SWEETEN OUR TEAS!
  • We don't have the resources...
  • Um ma'am, we can help with that!
  • GET AWAY FROM ME!
  • Because the items, such as fruits and vegetables, were highly perishable, meaning they needed to be consumed after-ripening before they deteriorated, it made less profit because much of the food would have gone bad by the time it reached in England. Tobacco, on the other hand, was no longer readily perishable once it had been cured, and it was also easy to transport since it was not bulky.
  • What are the negative impacts of the sugar revolution (social)?
  • I'm literally just trying to exist man...
  • During this time, Europeans' social customs were changing, and the advent of tea and coffee created a tremendous need for sugar.
  • What are the positive impacts of the sugar revolution (economic)?
  • NEXT BATCH?? I JUST SENT SOME!
  • Where do I collect the next batch of sugarcane?
  • The Dutch had already established dominance in the West Indies from the 17th century. When honey became too expensive for European countries, they began to exploit the islands for sugar cane. This had an impact on several Caribbean countries by boosting their riches, which in turn fueled strife between competing colonies. The African slave system began when the volunteer laborers ceased laboring on the plantations.
  • What are the positive impacts of the sugar revolution (political)?
  • Following the sugar revolution, a social order based on color was established. Social prestige was no longer determined by agricultural riches, but rather by skin color.
  • Sugar was in high demand after the revolution, therefore it became a cash crop. Tobacco was subsequently supplanted by sugar, which became regarded as the "king" crop. This eventually led to the Industrial Revolution.
  • Because of their financial benefit, European countries who played a big part in the sugar trade gained a lot of influence.
  • *smiles in European influence*
