Storyboard Text

  • The turn comes halfway through line 12, where Keats zooms out and looks at the larger world. The first twelve lines rhyme in alternating pairs. For the whole poem the rhyme scheme would be: ABABCDCDEFEFGG.
  • When I have fears that I may cease to be
  • The following line is just an insight on the characters fear of death.
  • I see this line as a metaphor which uses books as a replacement for the poet's high hopes in his character or identity. In other words, he wishes to leave behind a well known story of how he lived his life, but is concerned he might pass away before he is able to achieve this,
  • Before high-piled books, in charactery,
  • Personification is evident in this poem. Line 5 of John Keats Poem When I Have Fears, quotes "When I behold, upon the night's starr'd face". This line is an example of personification because it is giving something that is not human, the night, human attributes, such as a face.
  • Till love and fame to nothingness do sink.
  • Of the wide world I stand alone, and think
  • In other words, the author feels as though he is the only one having these thoughts, compared to everyone else. He may feel alone with his wonders and the only one who struggles with the fear of death and the imprint you leave behind.
  • The sonnet ends on the note of realization. This realization being that no matter what you may conquer in this life, when you die all that you were dies with you. Others may remember you, others may not, But in the end it doesn't matter because there is nothing you can do.
