I am José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was born in Calamba, Laguna. In 1877, at Ateneo Municipal de Manila, I graduated at the age of 16 with the highest honors. In 1878, I enrolled at University of Santo Tomas as a medical student then later quit at school, alleging discrimination against Filipino students by the Dominican professors.

In May 1882, I enrolled at the Universidad Central de Madrid, Spain. In June 1884, I received my medical degree at the age of 23; the following year, I graduated from the Philosophy and Letters department. Inspired by my mother's advancing blindness, I went to the University of Paris and then to the University of Heidelberg for further study in ophthalmology and finished my second doctorate at Heidelberg in 1887.
