Storyboard Text

  • Solid
  • The phase changes from solid to liquid when the ice melts.
  • Temp32F
  • Liquid
  • Temp80F
  • Gas
  • Temp52F
  • The phase changes from gas to liquid when raindrops form from water vapor.
  • This picture shows ice melting in the ocean. This is probably a cold area. Particle motion for this state of matter is slow. Particles do not move much. The particles are all lined up neatly.
  • This picture shows liquid water in a swimming pool outside. Usually you want the temperature of the pool to be about 80F for good swimming.Particle motion for this state of matter is a little faster than when water was a solid. Particles start to move away from each other. They are not in such neat lines as when it was a solid.
  • This picture shows clouds of water vapor dropping raindrops. This is called condensation. Water boils at 212F to change from liquid to gas. But it can condense any temperature higher than freezing.Particle motion for this state of matter is the fastest. They start to bounce around on the walls of the container. They are moving a lot and if it gets hot enough eventually the lid of the container pops off and the particles can go wherever they want.
