Storyboard Text

  • In 509 B.C. the Romans overthrew the last Ertuscan ruler, known as Tarquin the Proud. Tarquin was a harsh and unjust ruler, which lead the Romans to revolt. After the revolt, the Romans established a republic. A republic is a government where citizens have the right to vote elect officials.
  • AND STAY OUT!
  •
  • Rome was then divided into two groups called the Orders. One group was made of patricians, which represented Rome's upper class. The other group was the Plebeians, who represented Rome's lower class.
  • Plebeians had little power and money. They had to take out loans to survive and most had to sell themselves into slavery. This practice was called Debt Bondage. Plebeian life became worse that life under monarchy.
  • The Plebeians rebel. The Plebeians started to rebel and go on strike. They refused to serve Rome until they got a part in the government. Rome needed soldiers so they accepted. The Tribal Assembly was created. In this, there were tribunes who represented plebeian interests in civic affairs.
  • There were three different parts of this new Republic; the Magistrates, the Senate, and the Assembly. The Magistrates were the main officials of the Roman Republic and represented Monarchy. The Senate was the second branch and represented Oligarchy. The third Branch were two assemblies that represented the Democratic Element.
  • In 289 B.C. the plebeians won a great victory. They won with the law called Lex Hortensia. This law made it so that the Tribal assembly didn't need approval from the Senate or consuls. This helped change Rome into a democracy, although patricians still ruled the government.
