- Jing-mei’s mother suyuan was dead. When she was alive, she always told Jing-mei the stories when she organized the Joy Luck Club. However, those stories always have different endings since they are not the real ending. Finally, suyuan decided to tell her the whole story of the organization of Joy Luck Club.
- Suyuan‘s husband letted her went to Kweilin to avoid Japanese during the WW2. She met other three girls there and found the Joy Luck Club. Hope was their only joy and they sought joy amidst the sorrow. They join together to play mah jong, eat dyansyin food, and chat. After some days, her husband asked her to go to Chungking imminently, so she packed out all her things in a wheelbarrow and left with her two babies.
- On the way to Chungking, Suyuan saw many different kinds of things abandoned by the refugees. At the same time, because of the illness and tiredness, she had to give up everything, including the two babies. As the result, she finally arrived at Chuangking with only three dresses.
- The picture turn to Jing-mei went to join the first club with the uncles, aunties, and her dad since her mom died. Elders turned to invest in stocks rather than to play mah jong to show who is the lucky one. Jing-mei got to know those uncles and aunties again after a long time through their words and by recalling the events that was told by Suyuan once before.
- After eating the wontons, aunties started to play mah jong with Jing-mei. During this time, aunties started to chat and asked many things of Jing-mei. The atmosphere there made Jine-mei felt uncomfortable, so she decided to leave. However, aunties asked her to stay and started to tell her something that is very important.
- Aunties told Jing-mei that her mon, Suyuan, was always finding her two daughters that was given up on the way to Chungking in her life, but she didn’t achieve this goal. therefore, the aunties were continued to help her to write the letters to China to find that two girls. Finally, they got a reply from China, which means that they found Suyuan’s daughters. Aunties asked Jing-mei to go to China and tell her sisters the life of their mom, and Jing-mei agreed.
