Before the Revolution, Haiti was owned by France and they transported many black slaves there. They worked them brutally for the production of sugar and coffee in the colony. Ideas from the American and French Revolution inspired them to revolt.
A major figure in this revolution was Toussaint Louverture, who was a former slave. He was freed and he grew to be successful and wealthy as a land and slave owner.

The purpose of the Haitian Revolution was to end slavery and the slave trade in Haiti. Louverture had led the Haitian Revolution with enslaved people and freed people of color supporting him in war.
Although Louverture was not able to fight for the revolution near the end, his leadership greatly impacted the outcome of the Haitian Revolution, with them successfully winning and overcoming slavery and the slave trade!
