Story Telling

Storyboard Text

  • Hi, there! I am going to teach you some neat tricks to help you with story-telling just like Coates used in Black Panther.
  • For instance, this guy looks like a hero right? Bright colors and a smile on his face tells you that this is a good guy.
  • Now, by having him say "I just saved the city!" it adds more context and specificity to the character's joy and tells the reader what the character actually does.
  • I just saved the city!
  • It can be seen with the addition of another character how the main character reacts to different types of people.
  • The colors and facial expression of the new character can also cue the reader into the relationship between the characters.
  • *Gasp* So much drama. Here we can see how using visually different speech bubbles allows us to be inside the character’s internal dialogue allowing for further insight about the characters character without them ever actually needing to say something.
  • Oh no! My arch nemesis! What am I going to do?!?!?
  • I've come to destroy the city! Mwahahaha!
  • Let's review! Now we know that the setting, colors, character's internal dialogue, and a character's relationship with other characters can all aid in getting the intended message of the piece across.
  • For example, Coates uses vastly different colors and poses for the "hero" and "villain" characters to signal their roles. He also has Black Panther himself speak primarily in an internal monologue, signaling at the character's insightfulness.
  • Legendary author Ta-Nehisi Coates uses all of these literary/visual devices in his comic Black Panther.
